Looking Ahead to Fall

It's not even Summer yet and I'm already looking ahead to all of the great Fall book releases. Crazy, huh? One book that I'm excited about is Jeffrey Bilhuber: Defining Luxury. In the book, Bilhuber explores luxury- what it means and why we need it in our daily lives. To Bilhuber, luxury can be found in small things like fresh flowers or in grand statement pieces. But more importantly, he writes that "Luxury is cultivated from the inside out, not the outside in." So true! The book features gorgeous photos of Bilhuber's work, including many projects that have not been published before. Here is a sneak peek of a few of Bilhuber's projects that made it into the book.

  6. Fairfax- I can't figure out what's going on with that book. It was supposed to be released last year. Now it's this year. Who knows?

Curious ... aren't the woven-rattan chairs shown in the third and last photographs the very same ones that appeared in Bilhuber's dining room in Elledecor recently? Could they have been recycled from shot to shot?

  8. Hello Peak,
Sounds like a great read. I'm working my way through "Deluxe: How Luxury Lost Its Luster" by Dana Thomas. Mr. Bilhuber's statement that luxury comes from inside and consists of the little things is right on track. I'm interested in seeing how far he takes that in the book. I have a feeling we may see a bit of a conspicuous consumption (read: visible logo) backlash with the economic situation.

    Thanks for the head's up!

P.S. And you look divine on Mr. Devine's site, too. Very chic and elegant.

  9. E & E- "Deluxe" is a fantastic book!I really enjoyed reading it. I think a lot of people are rethinking luxury now due to the economy, politics, the "Deluxe" book- so I think Bilhuber's book is very timely.

  10. Anon- Hmmm, I don't know. Perhaps. Or, maybe that chair is one of those pieces that he loves and uses from time to time? I think it's a great chair, and one that is a bit unique too.

Peak, according to Elledecor, the woven rattan chairs in Bilhuber's apartment (same as seen in the other shots of clients' houses) are late 19th-century antiques with Chinese-lacquer panels, not new at all. Hmmmmm ...

  12. Anon- Glad you have your copy of that article! Perhaps they are owned by Bilhuber, but were "on loan" for the other shoot??? They are good looking chairs and they definitely add some zing to the photos!

anonymous...its not a big mystery that designers often resell items that they have out grown or grew tired of to clients. It is indeed very plausible that the chairs in Bilhubers apartment are antique and just so happened to have been sold to the owner in the picture posted here. Or perhaps gifted? I wouldnt read anything into it that isnt there.
