When I posted about the Edward Zajac auction week before last, a few of you requested that I share more photos of Zajac & Callahan interiors. It wasn't hard to find photos of their work as it was published quite frequently during the 1970s. In fact, all of the photos featured here came from just a few 1970 issues of House & Garden.
There really isn't much I need to add to the photos as they speak for themselves. However, I will say that it's important to keep in mind that such a heady mix of patterns and prints- a signature look of Zajac and Callahan- was really novel for the late 1960s and early 70s. And if the number of times their work appeared in shelter magazines is any indication, the look must have been quite a crowd pleaser as well.

Wow, I don't recall ever having seen any of these photos before. The room with the color-saturated glossy blue boiserie must have been particularly newsworthy in its day with the quilt-pattern rug, elephant bracket, etc. Was it their own apartment?
ReplyDeleteClassicist, the blue boiserie room was in fact a showhouse room that they did. Since the photo was published in 1970, I can only assume that the showhouse took place in '69 or very early '70. A very striking room!
Deletesoo interesting! xxpeggybraswelldesign.com
ReplyDeleteSome of the elements of these rooms could be transported directly into today's designs. Others, not so much. I love the use of saturated color. Thanks. Mary
ReplyDeleteCan't say that I'm fond of their emphasis on pattern. The fourth image is the only interior that I could see working today, albeit with some adjustments.
ReplyDeletei love the horse!!!
ReplyDeleteI used to work for Edward Zajac and Richard Callahan, back in 1966. It was so much fun to see how these two put their ideas together, and to see the finished work!
ReplyDeleteAnon, How lucky you were! Z&C were certainly very talented!
