Way to Go Joe!

No photos in this post, other than the cute picture above, because I don't want to spoil the surprise, but check out Joe Nye's Beverly Hills apartment in the August issue of House Beautiful. It's a great example of how to fit a lot of beautiful "stuff" into a small space.

My sister and I were lucky enough to visit Joe's apartment a few years ago, and it's just as charming in person as it is in the magazine. I couldn't hold a conversation with Joe because all I wanted to do was look around his place, study it, and take it all in. He has a great book collection. (When you see the photos, note how he has numerous copies of the same book; Joe likes multiples so that he can take one to the office or a job site. Very clever.) He's got furniture by Frances Elkins, Syrie Maugham, and Billy Haines. And accessories like you can't believe. That man could set ten different types of table settings- and that would only cover half of what he has!

Anyway, enough babbling, but I do think it's a home that you'll pore over, just as I did!

  7. Courtney- you could post a very tight shot of the lampshade. That wouldn't spoil anything!

  8. I came home last night after a very long day and found House Beautiful on the kitchen island. A little weary, I didn't know if I should look or wait. So glad I flipped it open - Joe's space is as delightful as he is. What a wonderful treat.

  14. Loved his apartment. Thought is should have been the cover. Umm, I love Ms. Williams, but I did not like that room that made the cover. Is is just me?

  15. JENNIFER-

Yes, bravo Joe. I just spend two hours non-stop reading the new HB--and Joe's apartment is a thriller.
Wow--his sense of color, proportion, juxtaposition, and surprise are superb. It happens that the apartment is miniscule (I love that he said he had to 'walk sideways' to get around his bedroom) but nothing here reads 'small in concept'. It's ambitious, gracious, and luxurious.
I am so impressed with his color schemes. They feel modern but certainly connect with all the great design of the past. His colors are original...a certain dusty pink, a special pale off-green, a wash of a pale blue, and silvery tones. Any young decorator should use these pages of HB as their 'decorating 101' and a full course in 'how to do it brilliantly'.
JENNIFER-not to forget your wonderful feature on 'luggage'...v inspiring. Thank you.

  18. I know the feeling...when I go for the first time to a beautiful, stylish house I can't say anything else than comments on art or furniture or accessories. I hope I am forgiven by my hosts. Thanks for the tip on the magazine.

  20. Very beautiful - you were so lucky to visit!
BTW, I was so inspired by your recent posting on wallpaper - I just wrote about the French papers decorating the White House diplomatic reception room with a shout-out to POC. Thanks for the inspiration!
