Lighting Millinery

Before I left home for college, my mother warned me about mixed drinks and alcoholic punches- too much and I might end up with a lampshade on my head. Well, I heeded Mother's advice and thankfully got through school without any major embarrassments. But after seeing these lamps by mat&jewski, I say bring on the Hunch Punch! I'm ready to wear these lampshades.

Now, I'm not really a fan of flouncy or cutesy lamps and shades. And despite the whimsy of the mat&jewski lamps, they unfortunately would not work in my home. But I just couldn't help but think of those great feathered hats that women used to wear. You know, women like Doris Day, Audrey Hepburn, and the like. Maybe it's time for feathered millinery to make a comeback. And you can start with one of these lamps at your next party. Just don't say that my mother and I didn't warn you about the punch.

All lamps by mat&jewski; vintage fashion photos from Conde Nast Archives; images of mannequins with feathered hats by Stephen Jones.

Jennifer-another tour de force-wonderful hats and amazing lamps. I collect vintage and new hats and always look for occasions I can wear one. Since we are starting a Mario Buatta fan club, anyone up for a bring back great hats fan club?

  4. I agree - it's time to start having some fun! Lampshades seem as good a place as any to start with.

  8. As a true hat lover -- I did wear a VERY similar hat to the third from the bottom hat (the one with the pink feather) to a wedding in the early 80s. It was a wonderful burgandy color (to match my dress) with a white feather (to match my shoes and carried vintage gloves) I also carried a very vintage bag! LOL! I'm usually the only gal wearing a hat BUT I get lots of compliments! As for lampshades -- I'd be afraid the cats would get carried away with such enticements .......

  10. Brilliant. Yes bring back the feathered hat -- and on with the lampshades while we're at it. And feathered dresses... and the dinner suit.... but then I am a bit of a peacock, so a love of things feathered shouldn't shock.
