Cachepots seem to be one of those accessories that gets lost in the shuffle of home decoration. While terra cotta pots are perfectly nice, isn't it a bit more fetching to sheath a plant in pretty porcelain or chic ceramic? And what better way to display your Spring Easter Lilies and azaleas.
Most cachepots tend to be more traditional in design although you can find more contemporary versions. (Tiffany & Co. used to sell some terrific Elsa Peretti orchid pots that have unfortunately been discontinued.) And you're not limited to delicate materials- Mecox Gardens has some great wooden cachepots, seen below. You can even use a wicker basket.
Now, if all of this seems like a lot of trouble for nothing, you could go the route of C.Z. Guest and display your plants in their ubiquitous plastic green pots. This act of defiance might be daring, but I don't think it's quite so elegant.

C.Z. Guest said "To heck with it!"- so she displayed her ivy topiary in a green plastic pot!

cz quest might be extremely chic -but I think little details like a nice cache pot vs. the plastic sheath it comes in is such an important detail! I guess when everything else in your life is extremely perfect ( like hers ) then you need to lighten up in some spot just for contrast!
ReplyDeleteChange- I think you either have to have a vivid personality or be well-known for your style to be able to pull off the green plastic pot. If you can't pull it off, don't do it!
ReplyDeleteWouldn't it be "the peak of chic" to have cachepots made to look PRECISELY like the green plastic pots? Would be rather like Daisy Fellowes having her emeralds ground into pearl-like spheres with a very obvious "seam" going round—a reverse-chic gesture that made it look as if she was wearing a necklace made of plastic beads from the dimestore!
ReplyDeleteAesthete- YES! While I wouldn't use the real thing (real green plastic pots), I would definitely use faux ones! That's genius Aesthete. Someone should make those.
ReplyDeleteLove the Yeoward and the wood from Mecox :) Great post.
ReplyDeleteThese are some really eye catching pots Jennifer, and I esp. love the Magenta piece from William Yeoward!!

ReplyDeleteI thought the same thing BB8! Very clever! LOVE the faux pot idea!!
ReplyDeleteooohhh I love the pots from William Yeoward!
ReplyDeleteA smaller version of those pots would look great as ornate trash bins.
ReplyDeleteMeemo- Very clever. That would solve the whole dilemma of finding a chic wastebasket!
ReplyDeleteSome high gloss spray paint and a little priming.... voilĂ .. think I could faux lacquer those green plastic pots? By the time Aesthete's faux plastic version gets to market, I don't think I'd be able to afford them... Great idea, by the way.
