A reader asked me the other day to post some of my favorite shops in Atlanta, New York, and LA. Unfortunately, I've only been to LA once, and it was so long ago that I can't remember where I went! I can, however, talk about Atlanta and New York. This week I'll post about shopping in Atlanta with an emphasis on design/home furnishings/accessories. For those of you who live in Atlanta or have visited the city, I would love for you to add your favorites to this list! Look for New York shopping next week.
Furniture/Antiques
Belvedere- 996 Huff Road. This shop, owned by Julia-Carr Bayler, has been at the top of my list since it opened almost 10 years ago. Specializing in mid-20th c. pieces, the look is glamour and elegance. No clunky furniture here. They also carry Christopher Spitzmiller lamps and Jonathan Adler pillows and ceramics.
Scott Antique Market- This monthly antiques market is legendary both in Atlanta and beyond. It's a great place to find reasonably priced antiques. There is a lot of ground to cover, so wear your walking shoes!
Travis Antiques- Galleries at Peachtree Hills. A great source for 20th c. French furniture, paintings, and accessories. This store is open to the public. Travis and Company also has a wonderful showroom in ADAC (Atlanta Decorative Arts Center), which unfortunately is to the trade only.
Interiors Market- 55 Bennett St. Comprised of numerous antiques dealers' stalls, this is a great place in which to spend half a day. Many different styles can be found here: French and English antiques, mid-20th c., etc.
Linen
Belle Chambre- 318 Pharr Road. I love this shop for beautiful table and bed linens as well as candles and soaps.
Home Accessories
Lush Life- 146 E. Andrew Dr. Great accessories such as crystal obelisks, coral, sterling silver shells, cachepots, and candles. They also create lovely floral arrangements.
Boxwoods Gardens & Gifts- 100 E. Andrew Dr. A traditional gardening/home decoration shop. Boxwoods has wonderful plants and garden urns. In addition, it's a perfect place to find a hostess gift. Great antique furniture and porcelain, too.
Beth Ann- 47 Irby Ave. Beth Ann's background is in makeup consultation and application. Over the years, however, she expanded into jewelry and accessories. Recently, she branched out into home accessories, and she carries items such as cocktail napkins, candles, and decorative items. You can also purchase furniture from Bungalow 5 from her.
This is just a *short* list as I could go on and on. Please share with me any shops that you like!
Also Armour and Co. in Morningside on North Highland Ave. is a great new shop. For baby furniture, B. Braithewaite in the Howell Mill area across from Silk Trading Co.
ReplyDeleteStyle Court- Great additions! Do you know that I have never been to Armour and Co.? I've heard it's great; will have to make a trip over there soon!
ReplyDeleteI am going to have to find a cheap flight down to Atlanta!
ReplyDeleteWhat do you know about Roman & Williams design firm? I know they did some design work for Kate Hudson as well as set design for Lucky Number Slevin. I love their work but haven't been able to find any more information on them.
ReplyDeleteI know this doesn't have anything to do with Atlanta; couldn't figure out how to ask this any other way.
JP- I love a challenge! Actually, I am not familiar with them, but did a little research on the web. The principals are Robin Standefer and Steven Alesch, and they reside in NYC (after leaving LA).
ReplyDeleteTheir site (romanandwilliams.com) doesn't have much on it, but check out these links below. I love the photos of their kitchen on the New York magazine site. Thanks for letting me know about this firm JP!

Thanks for your list. I would add Leontine's Linens showroom and Circa Lighting to the list.
ReplyDeleteAre you at all familiar with Gerrie Bremermann's work? She along with Miles Redd, David Netto, Kelly Wearstler, and Jeffrey Bilhuber were named at "best designers" by Vogue a few years ago. She is a New Orleans decorator whot specializes in french antiques. I recently saw a home that she did in Nashville and it was AMAZING!!!
Sarah, I agree with your recommendations. I do love Leontine; I was just there the other day. Also, Circa Lighting is the best! I've bought a few things from them.
ReplyDeleteI am familiar with G. Bremermann, and I agree with you. She is VERY talented. Don't they call her the Doyenne of New Orleans Design? I don't know if I saw the Nashville house- I'll need to investigate that. Sounds great. Thanks for the info!
The Nashville home that Bremermann did was not in any publication. It was just a home of an acquaintance that I was in. I have had trouble finding much of Bremermann's work that is published.
ReplyDeleteSarah,
ReplyDeleteYou're lucky that you got to see her work first hand! You're right, I don't think her work is published often, but I'm pretty sure I've seen her work featured in Southern Accents and possibly Veranda. Sounds like they should publish the Nashville house!
Great list! I was just in Atlanta and visited some of these spots, I was amazed by the great stuff I found, I guess i came with low expectations, and boy was i proven wrong!
ReplyDeleteI am a designer from LA, if you need a hand with a list of LA shopping, would be happy to help
Mark- Glad you liked our stores! It's not NYC or LA, but we're pretty lucky. And, I may be contacting you sometime for that LA list.
ReplyDeleteAtlanta - Paris on Ponce - great crazy antique emporium - fave find: black patent leather ottomans with iron bases.
ReplyDeletePieces - hefty price tags, excellent taste, beautiful store
Victory Vintage - fun mid-century modern with a dash of kitsch
Kudzu Antiques - large building full of a totally varied dealer booths
Back to Square One - Highlands at Virginia block - great Heywood Wakefield collection and varied finds.
Scarlett Loves Rhettro (or something like that) fun antiques place full of a total range.
Pieces is the only beautiful shop where everything is perfect, Victory Vintage is well-edited, the rest of them are treasure hunting grounds - varying amounts of crapola with great stuff hidden among it.

Becky- Wow! Great recommendations. I've been meaning to go to Kudzu- isn't that on Peachtree near Brookhaven? Or am I thinking about something else? Will have to check out some of the others!
ReplyDeleteHi, I forgot I left this comment and just saw your question. Kudzu is in Decatur, close to the Farmer's Market. It lost its lease and closed, but it set to reopen in the new location "soon." I fear they have lost a lot of their dealers as they have been closed about a year.
ReplyDeleteI know the place you mean - that big place close to Lowe's on Peachtree Industrial? they have amazing LARGE pieces, like London phone booths and stuff. I like to dig through Chamblee as well. There are some fun shops on the Antiques Row. I should admit that I am a junker and like to have to dig through to find the treasures, so my favorites are not for everyone!

Just discovered one 10 east in Atlanta at 110 E. Andrews in the Cates Center shopping center to the right of Boxwoods. What a gem of an antique/home furnishing store. Everything from gilt consoles to a 1950"s Tommi Parzinger chest to an English sideboard. And the Steel/tree design dining table is screaming to go home with me. The one of a kind vintage lamps (bronze, marble, gilt)with custom silk shades are spectacular. My sister even commented on the mix of styles and prices. Apparently they just got a new shipment.
ReplyDeletewww.one10east.com
Anonymous- That is too funny b/c I just went there for the first time two weeks ago! It's a wonderful store! A great mix, and the prices on many items are quite reasonable. I may need to go back and see the new shipment :)
ReplyDeleteI have a friend who lives in Atlanta and He always telling me that there are lot of good shops in that place. Now I know that he is telling the truth. Thank you for sharing this very informative post.
